C is for Civil Rights is a social justice-focused book club for kids ages 5-9. The goal of the book club is to
introduce young children to stories and lessons of past social movements and help them reflect on how
these issues are relevant today. Each session features music, art-making and the reading of a children’s
book about social justice. The format is exciting and engaging for youth and adults, alike. Fall 2013 session
focused on the Black Freedom Movement and included books such as: Freedom School, Yes!; The Story
of Ruby Bridges; Let Freedom Sign; and Freedom on the Menu. For sample lessons, please check out our
curriculum page.
C is for Civil Rights is a collaboration of the Chicago Freedom School and Chicago Childcare Collective and
is completely volunteer run. This spring we will focus on the Chican@ Movement. For more information,
or to get involved, please contact jacob.klippenstein@gmail.com OR visit our sign up page!
